EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT (ECD) may be summarized as the holistic development of a child from birth to nine years old- to their full potential. Holistic development is inclusive of the child’s physical, cognitive, socio-emotional, language and moral domains. Thus, the development of the whole child. It must be understood that it is not necessarily obvious that the natural pattern of growth in children results in holistic development. Yes! The child’s pattern of growth unfolds according to their genetic makeup.

However, research shows that the interaction of both genetics and the child’s environment plays a vital role in not just determining growth but determines a child’s development as well. Whilst we cannot change the child’s genetic makeup, we do have control over the environment provided for the child’s development.

"In order for a seed to grow, it must be embedded in fertile soil, cultivated and nurtured. The provision of appropriate nutrients and specialized intervention will produce a healthy and productive tree. Likewise, it is critical that the development of the child be embedded in an appropriate specialized nurturing environment."

I strongly believe that a key imperative in the ECD field is to produce Specialized Early Childhood Development Practitioners. According to the Oxford Dictionary, a practitioner is defined as “a person actively engaged in a discipline” which in this context is the discipline of Early Childhood Development. Any person actively engaged in ECD Provisioning whether, at the Government level, Non-Government level, Providers, or Educators are considered ECD Practitioners and require the necessary expertise. Edu-P-earl has a zero-tolerance to any deficiencies in the provision of Early Childhood Development.
